![]() ![]() A strike aircraft fitted with four 20mm cannons as well as under wing rockets and bombs, the Typhoon would serve as a solid choice for a British tank busters. Like the Germans, the Soviets had storied tank busting aces like Aleksandr Yefimov who claimed 126 tank kills in his IL-2.įor the upcoming British faction I submit the Tiffy Typhoon. The IL-2 is currently already in game serving as the Soviet's strafing call in, but I feel that it's missing its true calling as a tank buster. How could you not add it?Ī true strike craft the IL-2 was heavily armed and heavily armored, earning it the nickname "the flying tank." The Il-2 came equipped with two 23mm cannons as well as the ability to carry rockets and specialty anti-tank bombs. Also featured iconicly as a tank buster in the final scenes of Saving Private Ryan. ![]() As a fighter pressed into a strike aircraft's role, the Mustang would be faster and more agile than its counterparts and therefore slightly harder to shoot down. Though it did better as a bomber escort and fighter, the Mustang was able to be equipped with heavy ordinance and rocket pods. ![]() The Mustang was used in many roles throughout the war, tank busting being one of them. There's something to be said here that only early models used the infamous sirens for measuring dive angle/speed and that the gunpod variant was the one meant to hunt tanks, but either way I think we'd be happy to just have them in the game as they're one of the most iconic planes of the war. Luftwaffe ace Hans-Ulrich Rudel famously claimed 519 confirmed tank kills in his Stuka. There were several variants that could do the job of tank busting from the true dive bombers to the ones that came equipped with 37mm gunpods. Stuka dive bombers were famous for their anti-tank capabilities in WW2. Rather than making it a slightly reskinned bombing run, I thought this function gave it a more appropriate role and something interesting to do. The main inspiration for this post came from repeated asks by people on this sub for the addition of the Stuka dive bomber to Germany's arsenal. The size of the designated zone would come down to balancing concerns but in my head 1/4 the size of a grid square or smaller would make it usable without being overpowered. Any enemy armor still located in the marked area by the time the strike aircraft arrives is hit with the faction appropriate rocket barrage/cannon fire. Instead I would have it work similar to the Katyusha strike in which the commander designates an area on the map as having enemy tank activity which then spawns a strike aircraft on the edge of the map. In my opinion I think needing to pinpoint a tank's location on the map would prove too difficult to make this call in effective. A high cost airstrike that targets armored vehicles in a designated area.Ĭurrent air call ins require the commander to precisely place the desired path of the strafing/bombing run to maximize effect on target. This is where a tank buster call in could come into play. This is especially frustrating on a map like Kursk where a well positioned tank can fire freely into your spawn point with no real means of retribution. You're shit out of luck with no means of dealing with enemy armor. Your ATs and engineers can't get close enough to get a kill shot with the bazooka or put a satchel on it and the only armor squad you have is a solo tanker in a locked unit. We've all had that game where the enemy team has an amazing armor squad in a Tiger that's just sat out in a field hammering your point and racking up the kills. ![]()
